SUMMARY:

The Web Designer/ Developer concepts, creates, executes, and maintains design systems and visual strategies for the University's centralized website ecosystem and other digital experiences across web, mobile, and custom applications. In close collaboration with the Director of User Experience and the Web Services group in Information Services, the Web Designer/Developer executes the front-end development necessary to achieve brand-aligned designs that best represent the University to its key audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Concept and Design

  • Create and maintain sustainable and flexible user interfaces for the University's responsive web sites and other digital initiatives that represent the University's communication strategies, brand, and strategic priorities
  • Concept, design and execute other digital communications such as advertising assets, microsites, landing pages, HTML emails, etc. that support institutional priorities and initiatives
  • Define user interface (UI) objectives by analyzing user requirements; envision system features and functionality
  • Ensure the visual design systems for the University's digital platforms enable front-end development that is compliant with current website accessibility guidelines
  • Strategically leverage web performance data (i.e., Google Analytics, Heatmaps, etc.) to continually refine and evolve the University's digital interfaces
  • Conduct site and user testing to continually improve the University's overall digital presence
  • Collaborate closely with other designers in University Communications to define and execute the integration of design across all mediums

Development

  • Execute front-end aspects of development for the University's websites and other digital properties using functional knowledge of HTML/XHTML, JavaScript, PHP, etc.
  • Ensure front-end design/development integrates with technical aspects of the University's digital experiences, user interfaces, and platforms
  • Collaborate closely with back-end developers in University Communications and Web Services to define and execute the integration of front-end and back-end systems
  • Assist with the conceptualization and delivery of future-state Web infrastructure to support enterprise web platforms
  • Ensure front-end design/development is compliant with current website accessibility guidelines and provides an optimal experience for all users

Project Management

  • Lead, or assist with, the management of key projects with University partners

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of responsive web development patterns and best practices
  • Thorough knowledge of managing Web sites in content management systems
  • Thorough knowledge of best practices in multi-platform web site design, including responsive design, W3C compliance, and WCAG 2.0 Section 508 accessibility standards
  • Thorough knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator), Adobe Desktop Publishing Suite, and Mac OS
  • Thorough knowledge of CSS, JavaScript, HTML/XHTML
  • Functional knowledge of data APIs, social media systems, and other digital communication technologies
  • Functional knowledge of server security and secure coding practices
  • Functional knowledge of CSS preprocessors (SASS, LESS)
  • Functional knowledge of PHP, XML, jQuery
  • Functional knowledge of RESTful/AJAX programming best practices, including web data storage, retrieval, and mash-up techniques (i.e. RSS, JSON)
  • Working knowledge of web-marketing principles and strategies
  • Familiarity with data visualization approaches and tools. React knowledge/experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of source code versioning techniques (GIT preferred) and software development environments
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate and build consensus
  • Ability to work effectively with a team and independently
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and set priorities based on workload

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in design, visual communications, digital media, or related field with at least 3-5 years of experience in designing and developing front-end digital interfaces

WORK HOURS:

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 7 (Hiring Range $54,413 to $72,093 annually)
