Job Description :

The Legal Aid Society is seeking a Director of Social Work for the Criminal Defense Practice. The Director will be responsible for the overall coordination, administration, and management of the social work practice in all areas of the Criminal Defense Practice. These practice areas include, but are not limited to all trial offices, Post-Conviction, Special Litigation and Exploitation Intervention Project. The Director will take the lead in designing protocols and facilitating trainings for all staff related to working with vulnerable and challenging clients in crisis. Additionally, The Director will collaborate with the Director of Training to focus on the development of multidisciplinary trainings for legal and non-legal staff. The Director of Social Work will also develop new protocols and strategies to respond to changing needs of delivering client services throughout the criminal court system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the supervision and management of Criminal Defense Practice, Social work Department, and supervisory staff of all units and offices.
  • Create and support best practices approaches to meeting staff and client needs with a focus on improving quality of representation for clients and professional development of staff
  • Responsible for overseeing the hiring of new social work staff in the Criminal Defense Practice
  • Develop policies and protocols for working with people in crisis
  • Partner with CDP Training Department, Director of Social Work in Civil and Juvenile Rights Practices and other members of CDP and Senior Leadership teams
  • Responsible for the collection and reporting of statistical data and grant and contract reporting with respect to social work services in the Criminal Defense Practice
  • Collaborate with Grants and Contracts team to identify funding sources and create proposals for programming that address the emerging needs of clients
  • Provide emergency office and case coverage
  • Initiate and coordinate special projects
  • Participate in practice wide supervisory and management meetings
  • Represent the Criminal Defense Practice at external meetings and conferences
  • Other duties as assigned

TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master of Social Work degree and NYS Licensure in Social Work (LMSW) and Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) certification required
  • At least five years of supervision and administration experience supervising social work and other professional staff located in multiple sites preferred
  • Knowledge of criminal legal system including court and community-based organization providing services and treatment to justice involved people
  • Extensive knowledge of mental health and substance use treatment systems
  • Substantive experience working with people confronting multiple health and mental health crisis and vulnerabilities
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary practice and decision-making
  • Demonstrated skills in advocacy, mediation, and interviewing

SALARY TRANSPARENCY

The posting reflects the range of potential salaries for the role. The specific salary offers will be dependent on candidate qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

$142,000-$160,000
